A Korean developed and designed in R├╝sselsheim and built in Turkey: The Hyundai i10 marks another important step for the Korean automaker into the European market.

For the 2017 model year, Hyundai equips the i10 with all sorts of technology. Much of it has so far only been available in the luxury class. Thus, the South Korean is even better equipped against the class leader VW up!

Design and equipment

Externally, the Hyundai i10 is now recognizable by its new distinctive radiator grille and round LED daytime running lights. Rear fog lights are used at the rear, which take over the design of the front end. In addition, the side protection strips have been rearranged, and the aluminum rims round off the design.

Hyundai has not skimped on the equipment and has added all kinds of extras to the portfolio. In the future, automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, heated seats and the Smart Key system will be among the extras.

Assistance systems and engines

Various assistance systems are also included to support the driver on his journeys. These include, for example, the multifunction camera in the windshield, the front collision warning system or the lane departure warning system.

The car is powered by the familiar range of engines, which produce 67 hp and 87 hp. It has a five-speed manual transmission, or optional four-speed automatic.

As an economical and well-equipped subcompact, the Hyundai i10 is a serious competitor to other models in its class - such as the VW up. The buyer can choose from various engine options: With a consumption of 4.6 and 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers, the Hyundai is very economical, but the top speed is also only 155 and 175 km/h, respectively. However, this is perfectly adequate for city driving, and city streets are likely to be the most frequented terrain for the small Korean. The good noise insulation also ensures that it drives extremely quietly through the streets. The small Hyundai can also keep up with its competitors in terms of price: The base model is already available from a price of 9,950 euros.

Equipment lines for every taste

Four different equipment lines offer a wide range of different interiors: the basic version includes electronically assisted power steering, central locking and an on-board computer. The Classic equipment line is already much more comfortable with air conditioning, an audio system and CD player. The Trend version also comes with power windows, a height-adjustable driver's seat and a heated steering wheel, while the Style variant offers the most extensive equipment with LED daytime running lights, fog lights, cornering lights, alloy wheels and a Bluetooth hands-free system.

An absolute eye-catcher inside and out

At 3.67 meters long, the Hyundai is even a full 13 centimeters longer than its strongest competitor, the VW up. The wheelbase of 2.38 meters also offers enough space for four full-grown people, and the trunk with a volume of 252 to 1046 liters is exceptionally spacious for a car in the subcompact category. The headroom and knee room in the rear is astonishing. The stylish dashboard is just one successful detail that makes the small city car a visual eye-catcher. From the outside, Hyundai's smallest convinces with its sleek and charming design.

The Hyundai i10 is not only a real alternative to the competitors in its class in terms of price - the Korean convinces even the strongest doubters with its equipment, interior and exterior. In addition to the aforementioned Volkswagen, it also faces Seat Mii, Skoda Citigo, Peugeot 108, Toyota Aygo and Fiat 500...

During the 20 years of production of the D models there were some changes in the technology. Engines ranged from 75-130 hp and grew from 1.9L displacement to up to 2.3L displacement and electronic fuel injection between 1955-1975. Basically, all engine variants are robust and have good torque. Since the D models are relatively light, the engine options are still enough today and you can drive the cars every day.

The most popular engine variant is the 2.1 L engine. It produces about 100hp, is robust and usually needs between 9-10L of gasoline per 100km. We always completely overhaul each engine. In the process, the crankshafts are also finely balanced. This improves the engine running significantly compared to factory delivery.

Gearshift and transmission

Citro├źn offered a semi-automatic transmission in addition to the manual transmission. This semi-automatic is a hydraulic gearshift that relieves the driver of having to depress the clutch. It is not to be confused with a real automatic transmission. The driver still has to shift gears, but without using the clutch.

Like the engine, we also overhaul the transmission. If desired, a transmission with an extended gear can be installed. It significantly reduces engine speed at highway speeds and increases comfort.

Hydraulics

Many things about the DS were innovative back then, and some of them still are today. The hydropneumatic suspension is certainly one of the highlights. How "the floating goddess" can adjust its height is unique in car manufacturing. At rest, the car literally lies on the ground. When the engine is started, the D-model rises. The height is maintained regardless of the load. The chassis can even be raised manually, for example to overcome obstacles in rough terrain.

The hydraulics required a lot of maintenance in the early years, until 1967. From 1967 with the introduction of the "green" hydraulics, this could be reduced significantly. We therefore install the "green hydraulics" in almost all models. Of course, in such a way that it is practically undetectable. In the process, all hydraulic lines are completely redone and all hydraulic components are overhauled or replaced with new ones.

Electrical system

When cables are over 50 years old, they are often brittle and then the power supply becomes unreliable. Troubleshooting is no fun for anyone. That's why we always install new wiring harnesses with every restoration. This ensures that you can rely on your D model every day.

The D-models were technical masterpieces from the 50s to the 70s, and many technical improvements have been made in the 20 years of their production. You can profit from this today. We can freely assemble and approve engines, transmissions, gearshifts and hydraulics according to your wishes. Let us advise you.

Nissan Micra - Detailed Car Information

The Nissan Micra has been on the market for a long time - since 1982 to be exact - but it has always struggled to attract young buyers. Now available in its fifth generation, the latest model has finally taken the looks factor into account and with a range of fuel-efficient engines, the Micra is ready to boost competition in the small car market.

Nissan Micra - Detailed Car Information

So what is it?

The Micra is the Japanese contribution to the highly competitive small car market. The new model has it all and competes against the brilliant Ford Fiesta and the Volkswagen Polo. The new Micra is truly new, and now stylish and pretty to look at. It becomes most interesting when you look at the purchase price, which starts at around 11,000 euros. There are also a number of personalization options that represent a completely new concept for the Micra. The goal is to make the new model accessible to a much younger audience than before.

What's under the hood?

Three engines are available for the Micra - a 70-hp naturally aspirated 1.0-liter engine, an 89-hp 1.5-liter DCI engine, and the 89-hp 0.9-liter turbodiesel. The three-cylinder engine is a powerful little engine, though not exactly fast. Top speed is 160 km/h and the Micra needs just under 12 seconds to jump from 0 to 100 km/h. The little Nissan is also cheap to run, with the 0.9-liter engine managing just under 25 kilometers per liter of fuel while achieving CO2 emissions of only 104 g/km.

However, the power delivery of the 0.9-liter doesn't feel particularly linear, as there's very little boost until you get to around 2,500 rpm with a sudden increase in torque. This makes driving a bit uncomfortable in certain situations, although it's only a minor annoyance.

Nissan Micra - Detailed Car Information

What's it like to drive the Micra?

It's hard to describe the feel of a substance, but we'll try. Many small cars feel notoriously thin and light in places; almost as if it would be a miracle if they (the cars) lasted longer than 10,000 km. This Micra, however, is a bit different. It has a reassuringly solid feel to it, as if it was designed to handle the most unforgiving handling its owner can subject it to. It may be simple and affordable, but it feels very commanding.

That feeling carries over into the way the Micra drives. While some (typically thin-tired) small cars feel so light on their wheels that drivers almost want to believe the car is susceptible to crosswinds, the new Micra offers good stability. Its cabin has a reasonable level of noise, and vibration suppression.

At most, the gearshift can be a bit disappointing, as the five-speed manual gearbox seems very vague and the shift travel is too long for a car of this size.

What does the Micra look like?

The previous Micras were rather disappointing visually, to say the least. But thankfully, the new model has a sportier and more stylish design than previous models.

The Micra may be marketed as a vehicle for frugal buyers, but you can have a lot of fun with some visual upgrades like a rear spoiler, 14-inch alloy wheels and metallic paint. Nissan offers plenty of customization, which seems to be in vogue at this end of the market right now. Contrasting color options and decals, as well as interior trim, are available to order. After all, no one is saying that small cars have to be boring. In this segment, you're now spoiled for choice when it comes to new cars with their own visual personality.

Nissan Micra - Detailed Car Information

And what does it look like inside?

The Micra's interior is typical Nissan - it's well-built, well laid out and easy to use. While the color customization options add some flair to the interior, there are too many rough and scratchy surfaces that found their way inside.

For front passengers, space and room is excellent. However, the same cannot be said for rear passengers, who suffer from poor legroom and headroom. The trunk is impressive, however, as it offers 300 liters of space, surpassing the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo with 292 liters and 280 liters, respectively.

What is less pleasing

The engine does not have enough power. We've already said that the Nissan's engine is adequate for general use.

But when you consider how hard the little car has to work to carry four occupants plus a trunk load, things don't look rosy. Add in a few feet above sea level, and with the air so thin, the little Japanese car might actually run out of breath altogether. (For those who don't know, the higher you go, the less dense the air, causing a drop in performance for naturally aspirated vehicles). Typically, cars without turbochargers lose up to 20% of their engine power in thin ambient air, which for the Micra means it's now only putting out about 50 kW of power. Fortunately, the tried-and-true powertrain should survive this kind of treatment every now and then.

Conclusion

It's a clever trick by Nissan to make a new attempt to tap into the small car segment. If it worked for Ford and VW, then there's no reason why the new Micra shouldn't find its fans as well. If the somewhat quirky exterior doesn't bother you, and you also don't need to carry larger loads in the trunk on a regular basis, then the Micra should be on your shopping list, as its price alone is hard to beat. Also consider adding the radio as an equipment option. You won't regret it.

At this price, there are very few cars that offer as much 'car' as the Micra. Add alloy wheels and the small spoiler and it instantly gains personality compared to the duller offerings in this segment.

The Micra is a stylish, attractively priced and solidly built small car that offers good value for money. However, poor rear legroom and an undersized engine somewhat mar the driving experience. Nevertheless, the Nissan Micra is a compelling option in this crowded market segment.

The History of the BMW E46 - Detailed Car Information

The BMW E46 is known as the last classic 3-series BMW. The following text gets to the bottom of it and explains what makes it so special.

The History of the BMW E46 - Detailed Car Information

The history of the BMW E46

In 1998, the BMW E46, the successor to the BMW E36 3 Series, came onto the market. It was available as a sedan with different engines and had four doors. Later, a coupe variant was to be launched on the market. Unlike its predecessor, the BMW E46 was larger and wider. It was produced until 2005 and then a model update took place in 2001 and 2003. The 3's biggest competitors at the time were the Audi A4, the Mercedes C-Class, the Alfa Romeo 156 and the Jaguar X-Type.

Timeless design

Even in 2019, the BMW E46 is still good to look at, despite being over 20 years old. The classic cloth cap insulates the car against wind noise much better than the soft top of the BMW E36. It is very sturdy and in most cases will last a lifetime. This is another reason why it is still highly sought after by very many enthusiasts today. The BMW E46 is the last 3-series BMW with a classic fabric roof, which incidentally also has a top engine that is still a real naturally aspirated.

Robust but also with some weak points

Like many other BMW six-cylinder engines, the BMW E46 suffers from comparatively high oil consumption. If this is noticed, new piston rings may need to be fitted. Even though these are not entirely cheap, the investment is definitely worthwhile. On the other hand, the very high robustness of the engines is pleasing for all owners. Thus, 300,000 kilometers are usually no problem at all for the E46. The bodywork is ideally protected against corrosion and in most cases will last well into the classic car age and the achievement of the popular H license plate.

The History of the BMW E46 - Detailed Car Information

Somewhat more cumbersome than its predecessor

As already mentioned, the BMW E46 is larger and wider, and therefore heavier, than its predecessor the E36. Even though it can also be steered very finely and sensitively, the lightness of the old 3-series is no longer quite so present. Because this had to give way to a pleasant solidity, which can be savored without problems with all engines.

The interior

All the controls in the BMW E46 have been tailored to the user. For example, the center console tilts slightly to the left. In addition, the 3 Series was equipped with many extras that were otherwise actually reserved for various larger models of the Bavarian manufacturer. These include, for example:

Xenon light

Cruise control

Harman/Kardon sound system

Navigation

an integrated car phone

a multifunction steering wheel

light and rain sensor

all-wheel drive

ESP

automated manual transmission SMG

Due to the many technical extras, many experts initially feared that the BMW E46 would certainly have many glitches in the electronics. But the problems were limited and made themselves felt in other areas.

Broken rear axles as a big minus point

In addition to the many positive aspects, there were also quite a few breakdowns in the BMW E46 over the years. For example, the belt pulley or the vibration damper worried many drivers over time. In addition, there were hairline cracks in the area of the coolant expansion tank and defective oil pumps (especially in the six-cylinder from the first three years of production).

But probably the biggest problem, which unfortunately occurred quite frequently, were stripped rear axles. The problem at the time was that they were not anchored well. The consequence was that they tore out again and again. In the beginning, the damage was repaired as a gesture of goodwill. Today, when it occurs, customers have to pay for the repair themselves. There is certainly a major shortcoming if not the biggest shortcoming of the Bavaria. In addition, defective control arms and so-called coupling rods also occurred from time to time.

With which engines was the BMW E46 built?

Over the years, the BMW E46 was offered with many different engines: a total of six diesel and a whole 14 gasoline engines. These ranged from 105 hp to a powerful 360 hp. The smaller engines are very economical, but sometimes also a little sluggish and therefore do not really fit the sporty character of the BMW E46. The 318i with 150 hp and the six-cylinder 320i with 170 hp represent a good compromise.

The History of the BMW E46 - Detailed Car Information

The very special experience in a convertible

Regardless of which engine is chosen, those who drive the BMW E46 as a convertible always have a lot of driving fun. As already mentioned, this is also the last 3-series to be built with a cloth cap. The successors all have a variable steel roof. As a result, it offered a much more interesting driving experience and made every trip a real adventure.

Conclusion on the BMW E46

Even though the BMW E46 had to deal with some breakdowns over the years, it can definitely be called a classic. Because it offers a very good driving experience and has been built with many different engines. Another distinctive feature is that it is the last BMW 3 Series that was built with a fabric roof. Because the successor models were then all equipped with a variable steel roof.

Even if there were some shortcomings, the workmanship of the Bavarian is quite good. A major shortcoming, however, is the rear axles, which repeatedly tore out. However, this problem existed only until the 2001 model year. Otherwise, the BMW E46 is a real classic and still very popular today, which promises a very high driving pleasure, especially as a convertible.

The Polo from Volkswagen - one of the most important representatives of its class

When it comes to VW and compact cars, many people think first and foremost of the tradition-steeped Golf. However, there is another model that can look back on a history that is almost as long: the small car Polo, which is placed below the Golf series.

The first-generation VW Polo made its debut in 1975 - at that time, it was launched just about a year later than the slightly larger Golf I. Of course, since the first generation, the Polo has been a success. Of course, a great deal has changed since the first model generation - both visually and technically, as well as in terms of dimensioning. Today, now offered as part of the sixth model generation, the Polo is one of the most important representatives of its class.

The following sections briefly go into the history and development, the concept of the small car and the current model range.

VW Polo Service - Workshop - Owners Manual PDF Download

The precursor for the VW Polo was the Audi 50, which was launched as early as 1974 and which in turn can be regarded as the successor to the NSU Prinz. Basically, the Polo I is the economy version of the Audi 50: a smaller displacement and less powerful engine as well as a simpler equipment characterized the appearance of this car.

The first-generation Polo was a three-door hatchback. With its angular body and glittering chrome elements, this car is now a popular model among classic car enthusiasts.

The introduction of the second-generation Polo took place in the early eighties. Similar to the first Polo, the Polo II's appearance was characterized by an angular body with three doors. However, this vehicle was not only available exclusively with a hatchback, but also as a hatchback variant. Furthermore, the Polo was available as both a gasoline and diesel model - its predecessor had been available exclusively with gasoline engines.

Model generation number three was launched in 1994. Compared to its two predecessors, the body had a much more rounded appearance. Soft shapes and bumpers painted in body color define the modern charm of this vehicle, which was offered as a three-door hatchback, a four-door notchback and even a five-door station wagon. The engine range included both gasoline and diesel units.

The station wagon was dropped again for the Polo IV - but in addition to the three-door model, there was also a five-door model, a notchback sedan and models with an off-road look called Polo Fun and CrossPolo. Once again, gasoline and diesel engines dominated the range. The gasoline range featured a model with direct injection.

VW Polo Service - Workshop - Owners Manual PDF Download

In 2009, the Polo IV was replaced by the Polo V. This car was available in both three- and four-cylinder versions. This car was available as a three- and five-door model, as a notchback saloon and as a CrossPolo. Gasoline and diesel engines dominate the model range.

The sixth-generation Polo has been in production since 2017. Looking at models I to VI, it quickly becomes clear that the Polo has grown significantly from generation to generation. Naturally, a great deal has also happened in terms of engine capacity and equipment. As a result, the current Polo is larger in size and, of course, more comfortable than the first model generations of the VW Golf.
