Kia cee'd used to be the name of a Korean compact car, but now it stands for an entire family: the five-door cee'd in its classic form introduced at the beginning of 2012; the cee'd Sportswagon station wagon, which appeared at the end of the year; and the 2013 pro_ceed, a three-door model with coupe-like styling. Prices start at 14,990 euros for a cee'd five-door with a 100-hp 1.4-liter gasoline engine; at 27,890 euros, a cee'd Sportswagon in Platinum Edition with the 1.6 CRDi and automatic transmission costs nearly double that. But that doesn't make it the most powerful cee'd, because the GT models as three- and five-door models are available with a 1.6-liter turbo and 204 hp. 230 top speed is specified for it, which is likely to plunge many premium carriage drivers into despair. 


The GT models are available in three versions as GT-Cup, -Challenge and -Track. The cee'd and Sportswagon start as Attract, with Edition 7, Vision, Spirit and Platinum Edition above them; at times there are also special models such as the Dream Team Edition. The pro_cee'd, on the other hand, is not available as an Attract, nor with the 100-hp gasoline engine, but starts with the 135-hp 1.6 GDI. There's also a new 1.6 CRDi with 128 hp, but that's tied to the higher-end trims. But still the best argument for a Kia: seven years or 150,000 kilometers warranty.


Those looking for a compact station wagon with good space and plug-in hybrid drive do not have much choice. The Ceed Sportswagon Plugin is one of the rare models. It requires almost no compromises in the interior, even under the trunk there are still small compartments - only a spare wheel no longer finds room. Otherwise, even four adults with plenty of luggage can go on a journey and enjoy the comfy comfort. The journey won't go that far purely electrically because the battery is empty after just under 50 km. However, the KIA is comparatively economical (18.9 kWh/100 km), so the Ceed manages with a more compact battery (8.9 kWh). Its advantage is that it can be recharged more quickly than in many competitors.

If you continue driving with an empty battery, consumption is 5.8 l/100 km, which is a good value for a gasoline engine. This also makes it possible to get over the 37-liter gasoline tank. The fact that it does not score more than three stars in the ADAC Ecotest is only due to the pollutant emissions, which comply with all legal requirements but are not exemplary low. At over 35,000 euros, the base price in Spirit trim is very high at first glance, but the standard equipment is extensive; two packages for a total of just under 1,800 euros are sufficient and the car is practically fully equipped. 


The extensive equipment certainly puts the price into perspective, especially since you get a complex powertrain or practically two powertrains. Until the end of 2021, you can also benefit from the innovation bonus, which amounts to 6,750 Euros for the Ceed Plugin - plus VAT savings on the manufacturer's share of 2,250 Euros. Around 30,000 euros is quite attractive for the test car.
