We find comfort in the interior, which is cleanly finished and offers plenty of legroom, especially in the rear. Luggage is the only tight spot: 275 to 1045 liters are on par with the Polo (270-1030 l).

But away with the calculator, towards the daily form. In terms of dynamics, the Lacetti is on a par with its competitors, most of whom are considerably more expensive. However, the comfort suffers from the grumpy engine (from 150 km/h) and the not exactly sensitively tuned chassis. However, there are no safety deficiencies: It tends to swing back in the swerve test, but can be recovered well with the (not very precise) steering. This also applies to the fully loaded car, which merely leans a bit more to the side.

Those who drive more cautiously and with foresight can take their time and enjoy the interior. Compared to the Golf or the Astra, the fabric décor seems a bit old-fashioned, but the dashboard design is very successful. With the exception of the two tiny main buttons, everything is clearly visible where it belongs. Passengers of all sizes find a good position on the height-adjustable seats, only the backrests could offer a bit more lateral support. In the back seat, the Lacetti has enough space, enough storage, but no center armrest.

On the other hand, the wider part of the folding backrest is located where third occupants prefer to be in right-hand traffic countries: on the right-hand side. Only the coat hook has been omitted, and instead of a handle, the driver has a glasses case. Which brings us to the view. Design master Giugiaro has elegantly shortened the (notchback) Nubira designed by his colleague Pininfarina by 20.5 centimeters and given it an almost independent shape. The trunk space suffers as a result (only 275 liters; the Astra and Golf pack 350 liters). But Daewoo is targeting a very young group of buyers, who will be well served by the Lacetti even when the first child cries. Isofix holders are on board, but parents are only secured in the front by two front and two side airbags.

They have to do without the ESP anti-skid program and the Euro 4 classification of the gasoline engines (there is still the 1.4 SE with 70 kW/95 hp and the 1.8 CDX with 90 kW/122 hp, the latter also with automatic transmission). Our first impression: Everything in, everything out. At second glance (always sharper), some things are put into perspective: high fuel consumption, no Euro 4 rating, meager safety equipment, mediocre brakes, no ESP. Added to this is the traditionally poorer resale. All in all, the Lacetti does not meet the (high) expectations that are placed on a modern compact car today. It is still a long way from the best in its class. But so is the price.
