Ariel Atom

Ariel Atom is a car manufactured by Ariel Motor Company, based in Somerset, England. The car is also manufactured in the US, under license. In total, three models were produced: Ariel Atom, Ariel Atom 2 and Ariel Atom 3. The current model, Ariel Atom 3, is the most powerful in the company’s lineup. The company also announced the creation of the RS Performance version.

The unusual design of Ariel Atom is that it is made on the basis of an exoskeleton – it does not have windows, doors, roofs that are familiar for all cars. In appearance, “Atom” is similar to the car “Formula 1”: the lack of wheel arches, stretched in front. The car comes with a number of engines and the most powerful modification comes with the Honda Civic Type R K20Z3supercharged engine. Also there is a GM Ecotec engine. With these engines, Atom can develop acceleration that exceeds the ability of more expensive supercars.

Ariel Atom was also unofficially used as a platform for an electric vehicle by Wrightspeed Inc .. This prototype also has incredible acceleration. Acceleration to 100 km / h is 3 seconds.

Ariel Atom 2

Origin of the car

Atom was started as a project by Coventry University student Nick Smart. Initially, the Atom wore the name LSA (light sports car). For the first time, Atom was introduced to the general public in October 1996 at the British International Motor Show in Birmingham.

Specifications

acceleration to 100 km / h: 2.7 seconds (according to the passport);
Top speed: 225 km / h
Power: 300 liters. from. at 8200 rpm;
The twisting moment: 210 Nanometers at 6100 rpm;
Weight: 456 kg [source not specified 749 days];
Gearbox: 6-speed with reverse gear;
Engine: Honda K20Z3, 2 liters, 4 cylinders, with the i-VTEC system.

Atom 500

In February 2008, Ariel introduced another modification – the Atom 500. It is equipped with a 3-liter 8-cylinder engine with a capacity of 500 horsepower. Also, she has a lot of parts made of composite materials. The engine weighs only 90 kilograms and is equipped with a six-speed sequential gearbox. The ratio of the mass of the car to the power of this engine is such that the specific power is 909 hp. per ton.

Atom V8

The production of the modification was limited to 25 units – each owner received a commemorative plaque and a unique, individually tuned copy in support of his exclusivity.

Ariel Atom 3.5

The modification was introduced in October 2012. Has received new technical improvements improving the performance of the model.

The modification of the 3.5R was introduced in May 2014. The name of the modification received the name of the prefix R. In June 2014, a police version was presented in a single copy.

American Motors Corporation (AMC) history

American Motors Corporation (AMC) is an American automotive corporation, which existed from 1954 to 1987.

The company was formed on January 14, 1954 as a result of the merger of two small automakers Nash-Kelvinator Corporation and Hudson Motor Car Company. At that time, it was the largest merger in the US.

Under the leadership of George W. Mason, intending to make the most of the use of the strengths of both companies, AMC focuses on the production of compact small cars, competing with the “Big Detroit Troika” (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler). The first such car was Rambler, which later became the third most popular car in the US.

In the 1960s, the company, led by Roy Eberneti, suddenly changes the vector of development and begins to produce large cars. This strategy was extremely unsuccessful, and after receiving significant losses, the firm returns to the production of small cars.

In the late 1960’s – early 1970’s, American Motors released sports models Javelin and AMX.

AMC Javelin 1973

In 1970, AMC acquired the Kaiser Jeep (off-road vehicle) as an addition to the existing business-class car. However, due to the increase in costs, the company focuses on the production of Jeep and AMC Hornet lines. By the end of the 1970s, the company managed to introduce a number of innovations in the automotive industry; so, in 1979 appeared all-wheel drive AMC Eagle, considered one of the first crossovers.

Since the early 1980s, AMC has been actively cooperating with Renault, trying to get the necessary capital for its expensive production of small cars. In 1983, Renault acquired a controlling interest in AMC, after which the production of all models, with the exception of Eagle, Jeep, and Renault models, ceased.

March 9, 1987, due to the deteriorating situation of both companies, Renault sells AMC Corporation Chrysler. The production of AMC and Renault in the US is finally discontinued, and Jeep and Eagle are becoming separate Chrysler subsidiaries.

Self-Diagnostics Alfa Romeo

Self-Diagnostics Alfa Romeo

Self-Diagnostics Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo cars are equipped mainly with Bosch control systems, including: Bosch Motronic ML4.1, 1.7, 2.10.3 / 4, MP3.1, as well as Multec XM and Weber IAF 8F 6V. All Alfa systems control the primary circuit of the ignition system, the fuel injectors and the idling system, the stroke from one unit.

Self-diagnosis function

Engine control systems have a self-diagnostic function that continuously analyzes the signals of the sensors and actuators of the engine and compares them with the reference values. If the diagnostic program detects a mismatch, one or more corresponding fault codes are recorded in the electronic control unit (ECU) memory. Codes will not appear in cases where the defective item is not under the control of the ACM and when a faulty situation is not provided for by its software.

Bosch Motronic ML4.1 and 1.7

In these systems, the BEU generates 4-digit ‘flashing’ codes for manual reading. When extracting these codes with the reader, the numbers displayed on its display can be completely different. At the end of the chapter, codes are given, both with the help of a flashing light bulb, and with the help of a reader. When diagnosing, use the appropriate column of the table, depending on the method of reading.

Other systems

The Alfa-Romeo software does not generate digital trouble codes for systems other than Bosch Motronic ML4.1 and 1.7. The reader reproduces the fault on the screen without accessing the codes. Although the digital code is not available, a malfunction of the system program, if it appears, will be fixed and stored in memory.

The strategy of limited controllability

The Alfa-Romeo system described in this chapter has a mode of limited controllability (a function known as “limp home” or “crash home”). This means that if some malfunctions occur (not all malfunctions cause this mode to be activated), the engine control system is guided not by the sensor readings, but by its reference value. This mode allows the car to reach the garage or service station for inspection and repair, albeit with less efficiency. After troubleshooting, the system returns to normal operation.

Adaptive function

All Alfa-Romeo systems have the ability to adapt, in which the programmed parameter values for some sensors and actuators change during operation, taking into account engine wear for maximum control efficiency.

Fault light

The models for the USA are equipped in accordance with national requirements with a warning light “Check Engine” located in the dashboard, which can also be used to extract trouble codes that can lead to a deterioration in the exhaust composition. market are not equipped with such an alarm system.

Diagnostic Connector Location

Bosch Motronic ML4.1

Two diagnostic connectors are located in the passenger compartment under the dashboard. The 3-pin connector is for connecting the code reader (see figure), and the 4-pin connector is for reading the “flashing” codes.

3-pin connector

Bosch Motronic M 1.7

For reading codes in any way, a 3-pin connector is located, usually located under the dashboard on the passenger side next to the BEU.

Other systems

The 3-pin connector is only for connecting the reader. It can be located in the engine compartment on the right wing, either in the center console next to the BEU, or under the dashboard on the driver’s side, or on the passenger side next to the BEU.

Extracting codes without the help of a reader (“flashing” codes)

Note: Additional fault codes may occur during certain checks. Be very careful when checking that these codes do not mislead you. After testing, all fault codes must be erased. The “flashing” codes received without the reader may differ from the codes received with the reader, so when analyzing the codes, refer to the ‘Flashing Codes’ column.

Self-Diagnostics Alfa Romeo

Bosch Motronic ML4.1

  • Connect the LED and auxiliary switch to the 4-pin connector, as shown in Fig.
  • Switch on the ignition – the LED should light.
  • Close the auxiliary switch for 2.5 … 5.0 seconds, then open it. The LED will light for another 2.5 seconds, then it will start flashing.
  • Read the 4-digit codes reproduced by the LED as follows.
  1. Four numbers are indicated by four series of outbreaks.
  2.  The first series of flashes means the first digit, the second series indicates the second digit, and so on. up to the fourth.
  3. Each series consists of several flashes lasting 1 or 8 seconds with short gaps between them. The numbers from 1 to 9 are indicated by 1-second flashes, and zero is indicated by a two-second flare.
  4. One series from the other is separated by a pause of 8.5 seconds.
  5. Code 1213 is reproduced as follows: one 1-second flash, a short pause, two 1-second flashes, a short pause, one 1 second flash, a short pause, three 1-second flashes. After 8.5 seconds, the code will be repeated.
  • Count the number of flashes in the series and write down the code. To decode its value, refer to the table at the end of the article.
  • Each code will be repeated until you again close the auxiliary switch for 2.5 … 5.0 seconds, and then open it. After that, the following code will blink. The ML4.1 system can simultaneously
  • store in memory no more than 5 codes.
  • Continue to extract the codes until code 0000 appears, which means that there are no more codes in the BEU memory.
  • If code 4444 appears at once, it means that no fault codes have been registered.
  • At the end of the reading procedure, turn off the ignition and disconnect the LED and switch.

Bosch Motronic 1.7

  1. Ensure that the throttle potentiometer is operational. The procedure described below can not be performed if the BEU does not receive the correct signal from this sensor.
  2. Connect the LED between the (+) power supply and the pin # 8 of the BEU connector, as shown in Fig. Note. It will be necessary to detach the rear of the ECU connector to get to the correct pin without disconnecting the connector. Be careful – do not damage the connector’s pins and do not short-circuit the two LED contacts.
  3. Switch on the ignition, but do not start the engine. Five times in a row, fully press and release the accelerator pedal. This process should be completed within 5 seconds after the ignition is turned on.
  4. The LED will light for 2.5 seconds, then it will start flashing.
  5. Read the 4-digit codes reproduced by the LED as follows.

diagnostic

a] Four numbers are indicated by four series of flashes.
b] The first series of flashes means the first digit, the second series indicates the second digit, and so on. up to the fourth.
c] Each series consists of several flashes lasting 1 or 8 seconds with short gaps between them. The numbers from 1 to 9 are indicated by 1-second flashes, and zero is indicated by a two-second flare.
d] One series from the other is separated by a pause of 2.5 seconds.
e] Code 1313 is reproduced as follows: one 1-second flash, a short pause, two 1-second flashes, a short pause, one 1-second flash, a short pause, three 1-second flashes. After 8.5 seconds, the code will be repeated.

  1. Count the number of flashes in the series and write down the code. To decode its value, refer to the table at the end of the chapter.
  2. Each code will be repeated until you press and release the accelerator pedal 5 times for 5 seconds. After that, the following code will blink.
  3. Continue to extract the codes until code 0000 or 1000 appears, which means that there are no more codes in the BEU memory.
  4. If code 4444 appears at once, it means that no fault codes have been registered.
  5. At the end of the reading procedure, turn off the ignition and disconnect the LED and switch.

All other systems

“Blinking” codes are not provided. It is necessary to use the code reader.

Deleting codes from memory without the help of a reader

Bosch Motronic ML4.1

  1. To extract the codes, use the procedure described in paragraph 3.
  2. When code 0000 appears, short-circuit the auxiliary switch for about 10 seconds, then open it. All codes in memory will be erased.
  3. Turn off the ignition and remove the auxiliary switch.

Bosch Motronic M 1.7

  1. To extract the codes, use the procedure described in paragraph 3.
  2. When code 0000 or 1000 appears, fully depress the accelerator pedal for about 10 seconds, then release it. All codes in memory will be erased.
  3. Turn the ignition off.

All systems [alternative method]

Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative lead from the battery terminal for about 5 minutes.
Reconnect the wire to the battery. Note. The first drawback of this method is that the BEU will reset all the adapted parameter values to its original state. In order to re-adjust the system to your engine, you need to start the engine cold condition, and then ride the car at different engine speeds 20 … E0 minutes. In addition, it is necessary to let the engine idle for about 10 minutes. The second drawback is that you will have to reset the protective code of the radio, the current time and other stored values, which will also be reset when the battery is disconnected.

Checking actuators without the aid of a reader

Only Bosch Motronic ML4.1

  1. Connect the LED and auxiliary switch, as shown in Fig.
  2. Close the auxiliary switch and turn on the ignition.
  3. Wait 2.5 … 5.0 seconds and open the switch. The LED will show the code 1411 and simultaneously the fuel injection system will be activated. The work of the solenoids of the injectors will be clearly audible.
  4. And Attention! The nozzles will work as long as the auxiliary switch is open. There is a danger to pour the cylinders with gasoline. Therefore, if you need long (more than 1 second) tests, turn off the fuel pump or remove the fuse.
  5. Stop the injector check by closing the auxiliary switch.
  6. After 2.5 … 5.0 seconds, open the switch again. The LED will show the code 1412 and simultaneously activate the idle valve. The operation of the valve solenoid will be heard.
  7. Stop the valve check by closing the auxiliary switch.
  8. After 2.5 … 5.0 seconds, open the switch again. The LED will show the code 1413 and the valve timing solenoid will be activated. His work will be clearly audible.
  9. Stop the solenoid check by closing the auxiliary switch.
  10. After 2.5 … 5.0 seconds, open the switch again – the LED will show the code 1414 and the charcoal filter purge valve will start. His work will be clearly audible.
  11. Stop the charcoal filter check by closing the auxiliary switch.
  12. After 2.5 … 5.0 seconds, open the switch. The LED will show the code 0000, which completes the check of the actuators.
  13. Turn the ignition off and remove the LED with the switch.

All other systems

A code reader is required to check the actuators.
Self-diagnosis using the code reader

Note. During some checks, additional fault codes may occur. Be careful, do not let the new code down your plans.

All models of Alfa-Romeo

Connect the code reader to the diagnostic socket. Use the reader for the following purposes, strictly observing the manufacturer’s instructions.

a) Extract codes or read information about faults.
b) Deleting codes or fault information,
c) Verification of actuators.

In the systems of Bosch Motronic ML4.1 and 1.7 codes obtained with the reader and using the LED may not coincide. To determine the value of the codes, use the “Code Reader” column in the table at the end of the article.

Codes must be removed after checking the components and after repairing or replacing any component of the engine management system.

Inspection procedures

Ask the BEU for codes or fault information. To do this, use the code reader or the manual extraction procedure described above.

DTCs in the control unit memory

If one or more fault codes are stored in the memory of the control unit, determine the values according to the table at the end of this article.
If several fault codes occur at once, check the common components for them, primarily the grounding and power circuits.
Perform tests in accordance with the recommendations, which describe the tests for most engine management systems.
After troubleshooting, erase its code from memory, start the engine and make sure that the fault does not reappear in all engine operating modes.
Check the codes again. If the codes reappear, repeat the above procedures.

There are no fault codes in the control unit memory

If there is a doubt about the serviceability of the engine and there are no fault codes in the memory of the control unit, the reason is probably that the fault is in a zone not controlled by the engine control system.

In 2006, the sixth generation Toyota Camry officially debuted at the Auto Show in Detroit.

The length of the car remained the same, but the new Camry is 20 mm lower (1470 mm) and 25 mm wider (1820 mm) than its predecessor. The interior became more spacious due to the increase in the wheelbase to 2775 mm (plus 55 mm). The glazing area was reduced by raising the lower edge of the doors. On the review from the cabin, these changes are not affected.

Camry has everything that is typical for this class of car – good materials and a known quality from Toyota. All Camry are equipped with a standard display which can be displayed by reading the outside temperature, power reserve before refueling, average speed, average fuel consumption, distance from the beginning of the trip.

The car is installed two petrol engines – 4 and 6-cylinder. Gasoline 4-cylinder engine, 2.4 liters modified, changing the cylinder head and exhaust system. The power of the power unit has increased from 158 to 167 liters. With., the level of vibration, noise, decreased fuel consumption (6.9 l / 100 km on the highway and 9.8 l / 100 km in the city).

A new 3.5-liter V6 engine with 277 horsepower. gives the car a good dynamic – up to 100 km / h accelerates in 7 seconds. In the maximum configuration this engine is aggregated with a six-speed automatic transmission. The reaction of the car to a sharp depression of the accelerator pedal the new box halved – to 0.5 seconds.

Safety systems include belts with pretensioners and overload limiters. Two-stage front cushions, side and curtains provide protection over the entire length of the cabin. Camry is equipped with a safety steering column. Protection of the head is ensured by energy-absorbing materials. Seats provide protection against whiplash injuries to the spine and head.

Car diagnosis

If you notice that the Check Engine light is on the instrument panel of your Volvo, or when the car is not working as it normally is, you should check the car for any problems. In particular, we are talking about self-diagnosis of a vehicle and decoding of error codes.

In Volvo cars, the appearance and location of the diagnostic connector depends on the vehicle’s year of manufacture. For example, to decode the error codes in cars Volvo, produced before 1995, you must use an old type connector. In cars manufactured after 1995, there is a special OBD-2 connector with sixteen contacts. Depending on the car model, the connector can be located in different places, but in any case it is in the car’s interior:

  • under the dashboard on the driver’s side;
  • inside the armrest;
  • opposite the shift lever;
  • next to the parking brake lever.

In the case of the OBD-2 connector, car enthusiasts should not have questions, but if there is an old type diagnostic connector in your car, then it will be useful to know that:

  • connector A1 is responsible for diagnosing the automatic transmission;
  • connector A2 is responsible for diagnosing the engine, in particular – the fuel system;
  • connector A3 – for checking the ABS unit;
  • connector A5 – for the diagnosis of automatic transmission – TCU;
  • connector A6 allows you to check the ignition system for malfunctions;
  • A7 allows you to check the instrument panel of the car;
  • connector В1 allows the motorist to check the efficiency of climate control and air conditioning;
  • connector В2 – to diagnose the speed-keeping system in automatic mode;
  • В5 – to check up working capacity of system of safety, in particular – pillows;
  • B6 is responsible for the operation of the seat control system.

To find out exactly where your Volvo has a connector for diagnosing error codes, we recommend that you use the operating manual for your car. How to make a diagnosis? This question is of interest to every owner of Volvo, faced with the need to decipher the combinations of faults. For this you need:

  1. Turn the ignition key without starting the engine.
  2. Insert the probe block for diagnosis into the socket pads (for models of cars produced before 1995). For machines manufactured after 1995, you need to connect the indicator to the OBD-2 connector. In particular, the positive terminal should be connected to the 16th connector, and the minus one to the fourth connector, simultaneously connecting the probe to the socket with the corresponding block for diagnostics.
  3. Next, you need to press the button located on the indicator (it is not necessary to hold it for a long time).
  4. The LED light will start to flash: with its help you need to read the error codes and decode them.

Take into account the fact that self-diagnosis can be inaccurate. The on-board computer may not display a fault. To obtain more accurate information on faults, it is recommended to diagnose the vehicle on specialized equipment.

Explanation of fault codes

Consider a description of the combinations of errors that can occur when diagnosing Volvo cars. In fact, these codes – not one thousand, but all of them we will not consider. We will take time only for those combinations that are most often found in Volvo cars. So, let’s get started.

Sensor errors

CombinationDecoding
R-0100 P 0103Control unit Volvo reports about faults in the wiring of the sensor air flow control. One of these combinations may indicate a fault element. You should check out jelektrocep or replace the device.
R 0105-P 0108Such codes were introduced in the diagnosis of Volvo, testify about breakdown of air pressure monitoring devices in the system. Also with the pressure sensor can be wrong signal, which indicates the chain breakage or short circuit. If the chain has perepajannye sites, you should check first.
R-0110 P 0113These codes indicate a high or low signal coming from the intake air temperature control devices. You should check the sensor for proper operation and wiring for breaks and circuits.
R-0115 R 0118Computer fixed incorrect work or failure of temperature control sensor antifreeze in the cooling system. You should replace the sensor.
R 0120Out first position sensor throttle body. You should replace the item.
(P) 0121-R 0123One of these combinations is indicative of incorrect incoming signal from the TPS. In this case, you also need to check the wiring or replace the sensor.
R 0125Control Unit reports a too low temperature of the refrigerant in the cooling system.
(P) 0137-R 0141One such error is reported by the car owner on too low or high signal flow with oxygen sensor.
(P) 0142-R 0147Volvo control unit malfunction has been fixed in the third oxygen sensor. To eliminate the error, replace the device.
ECM-4400This often occurs when diagnosing car Volvo Xc90 crossovers. It testifies to the erroneous signal, incoming from the device controls the fuel level in the tank. The sensor should be replaced with a new one. Can also be derived from this code, such as ECM, ECM with 440 440 and so they tell the car owner about invalid incoming signal to the control unit with the above sensor.
R 0178-R 0179Fixed too low or too high a signal coming from a device Snh. Especially, this error does not affect the operation of the vehicle as a whole, but if you choose to reset all the errors, it is better to replace sensor.

 Engine Fault codes for Volvo

CodeDescription
R-P 0171 0172On-board computer registered too low or high levels of combustible mixture in the engine Volvo. It could also mean unmetered air. Error characteristic models of Volvo FH12.
R 0173This code indicates that the control unit fixed leak of gasoline from the fuel system of the second cylinder motor. Fuel leak must be eliminated.
R 0174-0175 PCombustible mixture of the second block of cylinders too lean or rich.
R 0200The control unit has registered a fault in the control circuit wiring engine nozzles. Should make a thorough diagnosis of wiring for breaks and circuits.
R-0201 P 0212One of these combinations of reports that a motorist in one of the control circuit of twelve injectors problem, that is the wrong message may be either fixed chain breakage or short circuit.
R-R 0213 0214Data combinations indicate encountered closing circuit or breakages of managing one of two cold start injector.
R 0215Control Unit reports on the failure of the solenoid switch off motor cars. Often this occurs in vehicles Volvo S80.
R 0216The control unit of the car reported breakage control injection timing chain wiring.
R 0217On-board computer recorded the overheating of the motor car. Typically, in such cases, car owners check the level of coolant temperature. If everything is in order and not soiled by antifreeze boils, then you need to replace the temperature control sensor.
R 0218Car control unit informs the motorist on overheating transmission system. In such cases, some motorists parse gearbox, to verify whether the transmission oil temperature too high. But, as a rule, the problem lies in the incorrect operation of the temperature sensor. So its worth replacing.
R 0219This combination is indicative of unduly high rpm operation of the motor. You may need sensor adjustment idle speed.
R-R 0246 0243Such combination in diagnosing car report car owner about the failure of the solenoid bolt exhaust first turbine. Data errors can mean an incorrect signal coming from an item. The solenoid can be both closed and open.
R-R 0247 0250The emergence of one of the following codes when troubleshooting a Volvo indicates that solenoid exhaust shutter the second turbine is faulty. Such errors can mean an incorrect signal coming from an item. The solenoid can be both closed and open.
R 0251This code means the failure of the first injection pump turbines.
R 0231-R 0233The control unit has registered incorrect signal from the secondary circuit of a gasoline pump. You should check the wiring for breakages, to eliminate the error.
R 0261-R 0263This combination means failure of the driver of the first nozzle of the engine or the wrong message from her. You need to check the operation of the driver and, if necessary, replace it.
R-R 0264 0266The second driver is faulty motor nozzles or fixed a problem with the circuit element.
R R 0296-0267One of these combinations means failure of the third driver is the twelfth of the nozzle. Such codes may indicate problems in the work of the circuits. Need more thoroughly diagnose wiring to reveal it cuts or circuit or replace the driver. In some cases, you may need to replace the injector directly.
P 0300Volvo control unit informs the driver about the registered passes the ignition.
P 0301-R 0312Vehicle on-board computer recorded a misfire in one of the twelve cylinders of the engine.
R 0380Control unit incorporated broken one of the glow plug. In addition, this code may indicate a malfunction in the heating circuit. We recommend that you check the circuit or replace one of the candles.
R 0381This combination may also refer to the failure of one of the candles of the engine. But, in addition, it may indicate a failure of the heating indicator device.

 Removing errors

If you have considered and decoded the error combinations, and also eliminated the breakdown, then it is necessary to erase the code from the on-board computer memory. Otherwise, it will be shown again, which can mislead the motorist.

  1. It is necessary to press and hold the button on the indicator for more than 5 seconds.
  2. Then you need to release the button and wait until the light on the device starts to burn continuously. As a rule, it burns for about 10 seconds. In this case, the LED should not blink.
  3. After that, press the button again on the indicator and wait about 5 seconds, but not less.
  4. Release the button. If you did everything correctly, then the lamp goes out.
  5. The indicator should blink three times (a combination of 1-1-1) – this indicates that errors in the on-board computer memory are not detected. If you do something wrong, repeat the steps from the first paragraph.
  6. Switch off ignition and disconnect for 10 seconds the minus terminal of the storage battery.

The process of diagnosing and erasing errors can be considered complete. Remember that the list of combinations and malfunctions in Volvo vehicles can be supplemented, since the car manufacturer can introduce new combinations with the release of new models.
