Mercedes-Benz A-klasse 1997 Service Manuals  – The manual for the operation and repair of the Mercedes-Benz A-class car from 1997 with gasoline and diesel engines.
Mercedes-Benz A-klasse W168 Service Repair Manual  – A manual for the operation, maintenance and repair of the Mercedes-Benz A-ClassW168 series.

Mercedes-Benz A-class – a series of compact (until 2012 – subcompact) cars of the German brand Mercedes-Benz. The first generation (W168) was introduced in 1997, the second generation model (W169) appeared at the end of 2004, and the third generation (W176) debuted in 2012. It is the first series of the company’s cars in its segment, where a front-wheel drive was installed.

The development of the prototype was started in the early 1990s. When designing the future car, the engineers of the company took into account the experience and solutions obtained when working on the concept car Mercedes-Benz NAFA. In 1991, two prototypes were developed: one fitted with an internal combustion engine, the other an electric motor. For economic reasons, only the ICE model was released to the mass market in 1997, while the electric car went to long-term testing and refinement.

Initially, the series was a five-door hatchback car, but with the arrival of the second generation appeared three-door version. In the commercial vehicle market, this class was positioned as the starting model in the Mercedes-Benz product line. With the arrival of the third generation in 2012, A-class cars grew by 68 cm in length, which made them longer than the first generation B-class models.

The presentation of the car took place on September 9, 2014, the official world premiere for the general public was held in October 2014 at the Paris Motor Show.

At the beginning of 2017, there are several modifications of the car: GT / GT S coupe, GT3, GT R and roadster GT Roadster and GT C Roadster. The Black Series version was also officially confirmed. All versions are assembled at a factory in Sindelfingen, Germany.

The Mercedes-AMG GT is positioned as a competitor to the Porsche 911, Jaguar F-Type, Maserati GranTurismo.

The interior of the Mercedes-AMG GT was first introduced to the public on April 16, 2014. The presentation of the GT itself was held on September 9 of the same year at the Paris Motor Show. The first running versions are the GT (350 kW, 476 hp, 600 N · m) and GT S (375 kW, 510 hp, 650 N · m).

On sale Mercedes-AMG GT appeared in 2015 at a price of $ 129,900 [9]. Mercedes-AMG GT – the second model, fully developed by engineers from Affalterbach.

Mercedes-AMG GT S is the current safety car in Formula-1, making its debut in this role at the Australian Grand Prix 2015.

Tobias Mears, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, promised to release versions of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series and GT3 (racing and street versions) in order to compete with the Porsche 911 GT3.

In March 2015, at the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-AMG officially introduced the Mercedes-AMG GT3, a racing version of the GT, which will be equipped with an atmospheric M159 V8 engine with a working volume of 6208 cc (the same is installed on the SLS AMG GT3). The car will be made mainly of carbon-reinforced polymer in order to reduce the weight of the sports car to 1,300 kg (2,900 pounds) in order to comply with the rules of the FIA for racing. It is expected that the car will go on sale in 2016.

According to the English edition of Motor Trend in November 2015, the division Mercedes-AMG is preparing a new modification of the AMG GT coupe. The novelty will be called Mercedes-AMG GT R and will be presented on June 24, 2016 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In comparison with the usual GT, the new car will become lighter for 80-100 kg, there will be a full-fledged chassis, active aerodynamic elements and adjustable shock absorbers, a powerful braking system and large wheels.

Under the hood of the Mercedes-AMG GT R, it is expected that a modernized 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine will be installed, whose maximum power can grow to 404 kW (550 hp). With such data the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.4 seconds, which is 0.2 less than the S modification. In an interview with Car and Driver, Tobias Moers, the head of the sports division of Mercedes-Benz, said that the modification of the GT R will differ from the GT / GT S variants not only with power and a revised suspension, but also with active aerodynamic feathering.

Concern Daimler AG announced the launch of the AMG GT R version in June 2016. As expected, the car was equipped with a turbocharged 4-liter gasoline engine with direct fuel injection. Power of the power unit was 430 kW (585 hp). With this engine and the same 7-speed robotic automatic transmission AMG GT R accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds. The maximum speed is 318 km / h.

Mercedes-Benz B-class

Mercedes-Benz B-class – a series of compact cars of the German brand Mercedes-Benz, which appeared in German salons in March 2005. For the first time it was presented in 2005 at the Geneva Motor Show, and the concept car Vision B preceded the production car. It is manufactured in Rastatt. The car is somewhat larger than the A-class, while using its suspension and engines. As well as the A-class, the B-Class has a front-wheel drive, and since the second generation and the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system. The European Committee for the conduct of independent crash tests EuroNCAP classifies the series as a class of small multipurpose vehicles (MPV).

The first generation of the series with factory index W245 was presented in 2005 and was manufactured until 2011, when it was replaced by the second generation in the form of cars with the index W242 / W246. In addition to gasoline and diesel power units, the cars are equipped with hybrid (Hybrid / F-Cell), gas (NGT) and electric (E-Cell) engines. Currently, the serial high-performance modification from the division Mercedes-AMG is not presented for any generation of the B-class (there is only a conceptual version of the B55 AMG).

As of December 20, 2013, sales of B-class cars reached a mark of 1 million units (since the launch in 2005).

First generation (W245, 2005-2011)

The first-generation B-class car in the body of the W245 was introduced in 2005. In the spring of the same year, it became available for purchase in the European market, and from autumn entered Canada. The series consisted of cars with front-wheel front-engine layout, with a sandwich-type floor construction and a parabolic rear suspension. Many solutions were borrowed from the A-class. Mercedes-Benz W245 has a two-section construction: one part for transmission and drive, the second for passengers and luggage. A comparatively large internal volume is achieved due to the height of the model and its layout.

All models of the series were equipped with a large number of different passive automotive safety systems, such as the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) program, anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control function, cornering lights, active lighting system and others. In the event of a frontal impact, the engine and transmission passed under the passenger compartment, without causing damage to people in the car.

In 2008, Mercedes-Benz equipped the series with a “start-stop” system and an optional BlueEFFICIENCY package. In the model range appeared model B 170 NGT, capable of working both on gasoline and on liquefied gas.

On January 30, 2011, in honor of the 125th anniversary of the receipt of a patent for the first car with a gasoline engine by Daimler AG, Carl Benz received a 3-car Mercedes-Benz B-class F-Cell around the world. Start the run gave Dieter Zetsche, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Formula 1 racers Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg and David Coulthard.

The route with a total length of 30,000 km lasted 125 days. The start was given in Stuttgart, after which the route was to the south via Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, the USA, North America and Canada, Australia, China, Russia, Finland and other countries. Finish took place in June back to Stuttgart.

The purpose of the motor rally was also the opportunity to prove the consistency of the technology of power plants on fuel cells.

Mercedes-Benz CL-Class CL550

Mercedes-Benz CL-class – a series of luxury full-size cars of the German brand Mercedes-Benz. Officially it was introduced in 1996, but two-door modifications of the flagship models of the company and the version with an open body were produced by the concern before. It consists of three generations of cars: C140, C215 and C216.

The CL-class represents a ruler of cars in a body of a compartment collected on the basis of representatives of an S-class on one platform. Previously, the series was known as “SEC”, and later “S-Coupé”, but in 1996 it gained its place in the hierarchy of classes of the German automaker. The new series continued to follow the same development cycle as the S-Class sedans, but it had a shorter wheelbase, a more sporty appearance and was equipped with only the most efficient engines, which were also borrowed from the flagship range of vehicles.

The latest generation of the CL-class, C216, was available in five models: the standard CL 500 (CL 550 in some markets) and the CL 600, and the modified CL-AMG, CL 63 AMG (S) and CL 65 AMG . The latest model was the most powerful representative of the CL-class and the most expensive car of the brand Mercedes-Benz.

The release of the series was officially discontinued in 2013 (2014 for the United States). The management of the company Mercedes-Benz decided to manufacture a modification in the body of the coupe under the aegis of the usual S-class instead of the release of a separate series. The first car, released after the closure of the CL-class, was the Mercedes-Benz C217.

Among the main competitors of the CL-class in the segment of luxury coupe with the landing formula “2 + 2” there were such cars as Aston Martin DBS, Bentley Continental GT, BMW M6 and Ferrari 612.

The first independent CL-class appeared in March 1999. Externally, the car completely integrated into its new role as the flagship of the coupe models and if in size and rear it resembled the W220 S-Class, then in front of its four-stair styling was influenced by the W208 CLK-class. The car was originally produced in two versions of the CL500 and CL600. In 1999, an important event happened for Mercedes, the AMG tuning company, having been an official partner of Mercedes-Benz since 1993, was bought by him, and already in early 2000 a CL55 AMG appeared for the new CL-class.

In 2002, the car received a major upgrade, it should be noted that if the W220 did not leave a better reputation for reliability, C215 for its entire production did not have such a criticism. In 2003, AMG introduced the V8 CL63 AMG engine, and in 2004 the V12 CL65 AMG with the 612 hp biturbo. By the end of production (March 2006), 46,600 cars were built.

The last CL-class appeared in September 2006 year. The design of the new car was even more divided with the family of the S-class W221, some elements were taken from the history, for example, on the radiator grille, you can see the effect of the C126. The lineup is almost the same as the C215: CL500 (CL550 in the US), CL600 and CL65 AMG, except the CL55 AMG which replaced the model CL63 AMG.

In 2010, the car underwent restyling. The shape of the bumpers, the grill of the radiator changed, lights appeared in the headlights, the rear lights turned completely red, and the reversing lights were located on each side of the license plate. Atmospheric V8 volume of 5.5 liters from the CL 500 gave way to a new 4.6-liter unit with a twin turbo, developing 435 hp. and 700 Nm.

Mercedes-Benz E-class

Mercedes-Benz E-class is a series of business class cars from the German Mercedes-Benz brand, officially introduced since 1993 and now consists of five generations.

Until 1993, Mercedes-Benz produced a series of business-class cars without a unified naming structure. The suffix “E” comes from the word Einspritzung, which in German means fuel injection – an innovative technological solution that was first equipped with the predecessors of the modern E-class in the 1960s (for example, 230 E). The market naming of cars was maintained until the release of the Mercedes-Benz W124 in 1993, where the “E” symbol was used as a prefix (for example, E 220), and the car series was officially called the E-class. The need to use the distinctive feature of the fuel system has disappeared, since all the company’s vehicles at that time used fuel injection.

E-class cars are produced with gasoline, diesel, hybrid and gas (NGT) engines of various configurations (from I4 to V8), with a drive to the rear wheels or a permanent all-wheel drive 4MATIC, as well as in numerous body modifications: sedan, station wagon, coupe and cabriolet (since 2009). In addition, the company also produces high-performance versions, modified by engineers from Mercedes-AMG (E63 AMG and E43 AMG, previously – E36 AMG, E50 AMG, E55 AMG and E60 AMG).

E-class cars are the most sold in the hierarchy of Mercedes-Benz classes in the history of the company. By 2015, more than 13 million units of the series were sold.

Mercedes-Benz GL-class

Mercedes-Benz GL-class – a series of full-size crossover luxury class from the German company Mercedes-Benz. In the class hierarchy, the company stands above the M / GLE class and is the flagship in the brand’s cross-crossover range. Includes two generations of cars: the X164, which was released from 2006 to 2012, and X166, sales of which began in 2012.

The world premiere of the first model GL-class took place in 2006 at the North American International Auto Show. Initially, it was planned to sell cars only for the US market, but later it was decided to expand the sales sector in Europe. The original production was set up in Germany, but was subsequently moved to the United States. In 2009, the first generation was subjected to restyling, which changed the appearance of the car and its interior.

In 2012, to replace the first representative of the series came the car Mercedes-Benz X166, which is produced and currently. Production of the vast majority of GL-class cars was established in the district of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA. In 2015, the company carried out a restyling model, and also changed the name of the series of cars to the GLS-class in accordance with the revised nomenclature of indexation of brand models. According to the new scheme SUVs use the basic designation “GL”, and then follows a short designation of the class in accordance with the accepted hierarchy. So cars “GLS” designate a series of crossovers equivalent to the S-class.

Before the production of the BMW X7 and Audi Q8, the GLS class is the only German full-size SUV. The main competition is made by such foreign models as Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus LX, Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

Mercedes-Benz G-class

Mercedes-Benz G-class, sometimes referred to as G-Wagen, is a series of full-size off-road vehicles (off-road vehicles) manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) and sold under the Mercedes-Benz brand. Available from 1979 to the present.

The G-class was designed as a military vehicle on the proposal of the Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who at that time was a shareholder of the company Mercedes-Benz. The civil version of the car was introduced in 1979.

Unlike other series of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, G-class cars retain their unique appearance regardless of modification, whether factory or high-performance from the Mercedes-AMG division, for several decades already.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G-Wagen or Gelandewagеn) – all-wheel drive off-road car from the German automaker. The main reason for the beginning of the production of this model was the need of the German army in an easy vehicle. In close cooperation with the Austrian automaker Steyr-Daimler-Puch, the army version was converted to civilian, and in 1979, serial production began.

In 1990-1991, an updated version of the SUV (W461) appeared. Appearance has not changed much, everything also in the design was dominated by square shapes and straight lines. At the same time, the chassis was modernized, a generation of the W463 with a converted interior appeared.

In 1997, the model was again updated. There was a body with a removable top (cabriolet), in addition, two new engines were added to the line of power units: a 2.9-liter turbodiesel and a 3.2-liter petrol engine. The G-Class was very popular with numerous tuning companies, which changed and modified the interior, exterior and mechanical part.

In September 2006, the company showed a slightly updated G-class at the Paris Motor Show, and a 500-strong version of the G55 AMG was also presented. From that moment, Mercedes each year made various changes to the model, but this did not concern the appearance. Already almost 30 years the G-class is produced with the same design.

Mercedes-Benz GLC-class – a series of luxury compact crossovers from the German company Mercedes-Benz, which replaced the GLK-class in 2015.

The predecessor of the GLC class, GLK crossover was introduced to the public in 2008. The platform for the car became the S204 (C-class) station wagon that was equipped with a petrol turbocharged R4 engine with a volume of 2 liters (184 and 211 horsepower), V6 3.0 and 3.5 (from 231 to 306 hp), as well as diesels 2.1 and 3.0 (from 143 to 265 hp). Drive – rear or full, gearbox – 6-st. MKPP or 7-st. Automatic transmission.

In 2012, the GLK class experienced restyling. The car was changed externally, changing the bumper and optics, and internally: in the cabin, the square deflectors of ventilation gave way to a round one. New versions of engines have appeared.

In 2015, it was announced that the production of GLK class models had been discontinued. Instead, he introduced a new GLC-class, debuting in Stuttgart, Germany. The relative of the C-class model of the latest generation is built on the modular platform MRA. It allowed the car to become lighter by 80 kg with the growth of the wheelbase and external dimensions. Of this savings, 50 kg fell on the body, which combines high- and super-high-strength steels with aluminum, and the rest is the merit of the suspension with aluminum components and the transmission with a more compact transfer case. The volume of the trunk increased by 110 liters, amounting to 580 liters.

For the United States, it is planned to produce more powerful engines like GLC 300 4MATIC, GLC 300d and the first in the segment of the hybrid engine 350 e 4MATIC.

The coupe version was introduced as a concept at the 2015 exhibition in Shanghai and will go on sale in 2016. According to the company’s plans, it will compete in the market of crossovers for such cars as BMW X4 and Porsche Macan.

In the future, it is planned to expand the gamut of GLC-class versions.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Mercedes-Benz M-Class – a series of mid-size crossovers of the premium segment, produced in 1997 by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz. The car was designed specifically for the North American market and is the first product of the division Mercedes-Benz U.S. International in the USA. In the Mercedes-Benz product class hierarchy, the M / GLE model line is positioned between the GLC and GLS classes.

Due to the fact that the symbol “M” was already patented by BMW for the high-performance models of the subsidiary of BMW M GmbH, the companies agreed that Mercedes-Benz reserves the right to designate the M-class crossover line, but in The models will use the symbols “ML”.

Currently, the series includes three generations. The first, W163, was introduced in 1997 and opened a new market niche for the concern DaimlerChrysler. In 2005, it was replaced by the second generation, W164, which was released until 2011, when it was replaced in June by the third generation – W166. In total, for the period from 1997 to April 2011, the company’s clients were delivered 1 170 000 M-class cars.

In 2015, together with restyling, the series was renamed the GLE-class in connection with the revision of the nomenclature of the company’s internal hierarchy of models. According to the new scheme, off-road vehicles use the basic designation “GL“, and then follows a short designation of the class in accordance with the accepted hierarchy. So cars “GLE” designate a series of medium-sized crossovers, equivalent to the E-class.

The first generation (W163, 1997-2005)

Mercedes-Benz W163

A key feature of the Mercedes-Benz W163 was the 4MATIC permanent four-wheel drive system, which redirected the torque to all the wheels through the front, middle and rear differentials.

In 1998, the M-Class ML 320 won the “North American Car and Truck of the Year” nomination.

Restyling (2001)

In 2001, the car was restyled, resulting in new headlights and taillights, new alloy wheels, mirrors with integrated turn signals, 8 airbags, and various interior trim changes. At the same time, the ML 430 was replaced by the ML 500 with a 5.0-liter V8 engine. For Europe, a 4.0-liter V8 turbodiesel version of the ML 400 CDI is available.

In 2002, the company Mercedes-Benz introduced the model ML 350, equipped with a 3.7-liter engine in a V6 configuration. In some markets, the ML 350 replaced the ML 320.

In July 2002, on the basis of the M-class of the first generation (model ML 430), Papamobile was created. The company Volkswagen proposed to build a new car based on the model Touareg, but Benedict XVI decided to continue working with the company Mercedes-Benz.

The second generation (W164, 2005-2011)

Concern DaimlerChrysler announced a new M-class back in December 2004. The debut of the W164 model took place at the North American International Auto Show in January 2005. In comparison with the first generation the car was completely modernized: it became 71 mm wider, 5 mm lower and 150 mm longer than its predecessor, and the wheelbase increased by 95 mm and amounted to 2,915 mm. Thanks to painstaking work on the body, the drag coefficient decreased from 0.40 in the first generation to 0.34. The quality of the construction was enhanced by the use of a fully galvanized body with additional corrosion protection with organic coating at certain points and large plastic panels installed on the bottom.

The lineup consisted of gasoline ML350 (3.5 l V6, 272 hp) and ML500 (5.0 l V8, 306 hp) and turbodiesel 3.0 l V6 with CR system of the new generation (their debut took place together with the premiere of the new M-class), ML280 CDI (190 hp) and ML320 CDI (224 hp).

In 2006, at the North American International Auto Show, the company introduced the high-performance modification ML63 AMG. The model was equipped with a 6.3-liter M156 engine with a capacity of 510 liters. from. (380 kW) and torque of 630 N · m. Production was organized in Affalterbach, Germany.

In 2008, the model underwent restyling, which affected the external and internal appearance of the car, as well as a range of engines. The updated version of the car was introduced in March 2008 at the International Auto Show in New York. Changes in appearance touched the bumpers and front optics, the radiator grille (it was enlarged in size and equipped with chrome inserts along the edges). The rear of the body received a modified bumper with integrated reflectors and a reversing lamp, as well as tinted optics. Roof rails and large exterior mirrors were installed as standard equipment. In the cabin there was a new multifunction steering wheel with chrome trim in a design with four spokes, covered with leather. The door fittings were covered with artificial leather, and on request it was possible to install seats with four-level lumbar support. In addition, the M-Class was fitted as standard with the PreSafe Pre-Safe and Pre-Safe System and NeckPro special head restraints.

A little later the company presented two special series – Edition 10 and Grand Edition, – with a special exterior and a car salon. In 2008 and 2009, models that use BlueTEC technology with urea injection for diesel power units were added to the series. At the international motor show in New York in 2009, Mercedes-Benz introduced the new ML 450 Hybrid SUV, which was announced on April 8 of the same year. The car was equipped with several engines: one classic engine and two electric motors built into the gearbox body and performing different tasks. The new model consumed almost 50% less fuel than ML 550. At the same time, the total power reached 335 liters. from. (250 kW), and the torque was 517 N · m.

Production of the second generation M-class was completed in June 2011, and replaced by Mercedes-Benz W166 series cars.

The third generation (W166, 2011-)

The development of replacement for the second generation M-class began in 2006 and lasted for 5 years. In 2008, the company’s executive board approved the final version of the design from Emil Burka, which was patented on the domestic market on December 16 of the same year (a patent application in the United States was filed June 15, 2009).

Mercedes-Benz W166 PDF Owner's Manuals

Mercedes-Benz W166

June 8, 2011 in Stuttgart, the third generation Mercedes-Benz W166 crossover was introduced. The new features of the car include the updated seven-speed automatic transmission 7G-Tronic Plus, optional adaptive cruise control (Distronic Plus), an active lane departure warning system, and a pneumatic suspension with adjustable height (Airmatic). In addition, the technology ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM with active stabilizers of lateral stability for compensation of a roll of a body has been presented.

The W166 was the last product of the joint venture between Daimler AG and Chrysler (DaimlerChrysler). The concern has developed a basic platform and technology, taking advantage of the stable sales of Chrysler and R & D SUVs in the domestic market of the United States. Chrysler continued to use the same platform for the production of cars Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2) and Dodge Durango. However, in connection with the reform of the concern, crossovers vary greatly in terms of interior and body design, as well as the choice of engines and transmissions.

For the 2013 model year, an optional On & Off Road Package is available, which includes a two-speed distribution box from Magna International, underbody protection plates, a variable suspension program with 6 modes and other functions and technologies.

The M-class car won first place in the category “Luxury Crossover SUV” and was named the most ideal vehicle for Americans. This decision was made based on research conducted in California by the consulting firm AutoPacific.

In early 2009, India created production facilities for the production of M-class off-road vehicles. In the autumn of the same year, he opened a factory in the city of West Java, Indonesia.

In December 2012, a new car bomb was assembled and delivered.

Restyling / GLE-class (2015)

In the spring of 2015, the company Mercedes-Benz introduced the updated M-class, renaming the series in the GLE-class. In addition, the company first introduced two modifications of the M-class body: a classic SUV (W166) and a coupe (C292), which was presented in January of the same year at the North American International Auto Show.

In the model range of the class there were also changes: the GLE 500 e became the first hybrid of the series combining the internal combustion engine V6 with a capacity of 333 liters. from. with an electric motor generating 116 horsepower. The first 19 units were delivered to buyers from the USA in June 2016.

The restyling M-class range includes gasoline ML 350 BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC (V6, 306 hp), ML 400 4MATIC (V6, 333 hp), ML 550 4MATIC (V8, 408 hp), ML 63 AMG (V8, 525 hp), as well as diesel ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC (I4 biturbo, 204 hp) and ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC (V6 turbo, 258 hp).

The W166 car went through a lot of crash tests, including the EuroNCAP, the US National Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, where it received the highest marks.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Mercedes-Benz S-Class – the flagship series of representative cars of the German company Mercedes-Benz, a subsidiary of the concern Daimler AG. It represents the most significant line of models in the hierarchy of trademark classes. The first representative sedans appeared in the early 1950s, but officially the S-class appeared only in 1972. Currently, the series consists of 6 generations: W116, introduced in 1972 and produced before 1980; W126, which debuted in 1979; W140, produced from 1991 to 1999; W220, which went on sale in 1998 and completed production in 2006; W221, presented in 2006 and assembled until 2013 inclusive; W222, which premiered in 2013.

The S-Class cars debut most of the company’s most advanced technological solutions, including security systems and key features of the company’s interior. In terms of sales, the flagship series is rated as one of the best-selling luxury sedans in the world.

All representatives of the S-class are produced in short- and long-base versions (with the prefix “L”) with gasoline, diesel and hybrid engines in the configurations I4, V6, V8 and V12. Models assembled in Mexico or sold in the US are available only in the version with a long wheelbase. All generations, since the third (W140), have high-performance modifications from the division Mercedes-AMG.

In addition to the sedans, the series also includes coupes and cabriolets. In addition, on the basis of the S-class luxury cars Mercedes-Maybach and limousines Mercedes-Maybach Pullman were created. In 1998, for a S-class coupe, a separate CL-class was allocated, but in June 2014 the company again returned to the original line. In 2016, the first modification of the cabriolet was introduced.

The main market competitors of S-class cars are BMW 7, Audi A8, Jaguar XJ, Maserati Quattroporte and Lexus LS.

The first generation (W116, 1972-1980)

The W116 is the first official representative of the S-Class, which appeared in August 1972. The car was radically different from its predecessor, the exterior design was more manly, but sporty, which will continue on all models of the car until the mid-1990s.

Mercedes-Benz W116

Initially, the family included four models – six-cylinder 280S, 280SE and eight-cylinder 350SE and 450SE. A year later, models with a long base V116 350SEL and 450SEL (280SEL c 1974) appeared. The line-up is replenished in 1975 with a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9, which, like the 300SEL 6.3 of the W109 series mentioned above, was equipped with a powerful M100 engine of the 600th limousine. In 1978, a unique 300SD model with a turbodiesel appeared that was produced only for export to the USA and Canada, simultaneously in the 78th year to the top version 450SEL 6.9 116 series, for the first time in the world an anti-lock system is installed. Its cost at first was extremely high and amounted to 10% of the price of a very cheap car.

In mid-1980, the production of the first S-class is being completed. A total of 473 035 cars were produced, including 78 256 V116 (including 7380 450SEL 6.9) and 28 634 diesel versions. If we consider that the 1973 Oil Crisis coincided with the launch of the car, the success of production of this scale is particularly impressive, thanks to high quality and exports around the world.

The second generation (W126, 1979-1992)

In September 1979, at the Frankfurt Motor Show was shown a car that turned the whole design of the automotive world, and instantly threw in the shadow of its predecessor W116. Externally, the car W126, created by designer Bruno Sacco, had an organic design that brilliantly combined the sporting character and retained a prestigious appearance. The cars were equipped with airbags, pretensioners of belts and many other innovations, which were later switched to other cars.

Initially, the range of models included 280S and 280SE with a straight six-cylinder engine and 380SE with V8. In 1980, they were supplemented with 500SE, as well as long-throw models 280SEL, 380SEL and the flagship 500SEL. There was also a turbodiesel model for export to North America – 300SD. The popularity of the second-generation S-class, including long-wheelbase versions, in all markets was so high that in 1981 it led to the cessation of the production of the representative “six hundredth” W100 limousine. In 1985, cars underwent a major renovation, during which the last carbureted model of the S-class 280S was removed from the model line. The line-up was opened by the 300SE and 300SEL, followed by cars with V8 420SE / SEL, 500SE / SEL and the new flagship 560SE / 560SEL. And the US market also came out 300SDL (until 1987 in 1990 there were 350SD and 350SDL models).

The W126 series has become the most successful in the entire S-Class line in terms of the length of production and the number of copies built, despite the fact that it has been replaced by the next three generations. The series was produced until 1991 (500 and 560SEL up to 92nd) and for 12 years 818 105 sedans were produced.

The third generation (W140, 1991-1998)

In March 1991 at the Geneva Motor Show debuted the largest in the history of the S-Class W140 series. The car was distinguished by a sensational amount of the most advanced technical innovations: from double-glazed windows to the rear antennas. But the main advantage of the 140 series, in addition to the extensive line of traditional engines, including the inline “sixes” (300SE / SEL) and V8 (400SE / SEL and 500SE / 500SEL), was the first in the history of the famous brand engine V12, installed on the new flagship models 600SE and 600SEL. Thus, the W140 S-Class series became not only the direct heir of the W126 series, but also the legendary 600th W100 limousine (1963-1981).

1995-1996 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

1995-1996 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

In 1992, two new budget models appeared: petrol 300SE 2.8 and turbodiesel 300SD, proposed not only for the North American market. In the fall of 1993, the company adopted a new classification system, according to which S350 Turbodiesel, S280, S320, S420, S500 / S500L and S600 / S500 appeared in place of 300SD, 300SE 2.8, 300SE / SEL, 400SE / SEL, 500SE / SEL and 600SE / SEL respectively, S600L.

Restyling (1994)

In March 1994 the sedan undergoes restyling. Externally, the car changes the orange panes of the direction indicators to transparent ones, and new lights are received from behind. In addition, the vehicle’s clearance is reduced, and the matte plastic bumpers begin to color the bodywork. Inside the car gets the updated electronics and a new interior. In 1996 series W140 receives such high-tech electronic systems as Parktronic and GPS-navigator. In 1996, the S-class officially separated the coupe, which became a separate CL-class, as well as a new diesel model S300 Turbodiesel.

In total, up to September 1998, 406,710 sedans were produced (including 28,101 “diesel engines”), 218,119 long-haul W140s, and 35,916 “six-hundredths”. World (and especially European) sales of the W140 series could not repeat the success of the predecessor, in part because of the high price and too “evoking” dimensions, which was not welcomed in the politically correct countries of Western Europe, but thanks to the same reasons, this series of Mercedes-Benz cars left a very significant imprint in the newest Russian history of the 1990s.

The fourth generation (W220, 1998-2005)

In the second half of the 1990s, Daimler-Benz, which became part of the transnational group DaimlerChrysler, was forced to reconsider its overly conservative concept of a luxury car (segment F according to the European classification), suggesting that such a car should be the most impressive both in design and in design be the most comfortable, and therefore, heavy and complex in design. Accordingly, a large fuel consumption and expensive maintenance were not taken into account. The company reoriented to a more elegant style, presupposing the preservation of a spacious saloon, saturated with a variety of high-tech devices to increase comfort, but with a more compact exterior dimensions and greater economy due to the simplification of the car’s design. Appeared in the summer of 1998, the S-Class W220 was 300 kg lighter and 120 mm shorter than its predecessor and featured a futuristic body design with rounded exterior details. At the same time, the interior volume of the cabin was even increased, and the saturation of the most diverse electronics only increased.

If the former diesel S-class models were initially limited to export to the US market (primarily for the fulfillment of the CAFE fuel standards by the Mercedes-Benz brand), and therefore remained only budget models with limited circulation, realized mainly through fleet sales, then after the emergence of a revolutionary Common Rail technology, the new budget model S320 CDI has become very popular already in other markets and private customers. The diesel lineup was supplemented also by the flagship model S400 CDI with the turbodiesel V8. The W220 series started with V6 – S280 (for export to Asia), S320 (1998-2002) and S350 (2002-2005), V8 continued (S430 and S500) and ended with the flagship V12 on the S600. In 1999, after the purchase of the AMG company by Mercedes-Benz, a sporty model S55 AMG with a forced V8 engine appeared in the company’s lineup. There were also more rare versions with V12 – S63 AMG (2002) and S65 AMG (2004-2005).

Restyling (2002)

In 2000, the concern Daimler AG began to develop a concept of facelift for the car. The upgraded version, which received a more aerodynamic front end and updated taillights, became available to customers since September 2002. In general, with the exception of the installed radiator grille at a more vertical angle, a new transparent headlight housing and lower air intakes on the front bumper, the overall look of the car remained unchanged. In addition, the line of engines was enlarged and the 4MATIC all-wheel drive version with electronically controlled traction appeared, which distributed engine power as follows: 40% for the front and 60% for the rear axle. All cars of the series in the standard configuration got a multimedia system COMAND, and the S600 model was additionally equipped with a navigation system

The W220 series was quite successful: only 485,000 sedans were produced. Nevertheless, the model began to pursue chronic breakdowns of such units as the air suspension, especially on early-production cars (before 2002), which spoiled the reputation of not only this S-Class series, but also caused a sensitive damage to the brand Mercedes-Benz as a whole, which started to noticeably give way to its market positions not only to its compatriot BMW competitor, but also to the Japanese premium brands Lexus and Infiniti.

The fifth generation (W221, 2005-2013)

The S-class in the 221 body was first shown to the public in the fall of 2005. In the exterior of the car (especially in the voluminous arches of the wheels) the motifs of retro-styling and the influence of the Maybach W240 limousine are clearly visible. The package of electronic systems included the most modern and diverse systems of safety and comfort. The lineup included petrol S300 (for export to Asia), S350 with V6, S450 and S500 with V8 (in the USA – S550) and S600 with V12, as well as diesel models S320 CDI and S420 CDI. Top models are two models AMG S63 and S65.

In 2008, due to sharply increased world fuel prices and public interest in “green” technologies, for the first time in the history of the S-Class a hybrid model S400 Hybrid appeared.

Restyling (2009)

In 2009, the W221 series underwent restyling, and also received an optional all-wheel drive transmission and a number of new electronic systems and eco-friendly diesel versions of Bluetec with filters in the exhaust system. Since the end of 2010, new diesel (CDI) and gasoline (CGI) models S250 CDI, S350 CDI and S350 CGI and S500 CGI have appeared in the W221 series.

Sixth Generation W222 (2013-)

The sixth generation of the flagship series of S-class executive cars, code-named W222, is available in 2013. The development of design, started back in 2009, was engaged in Robert Lesnik. The exterior of the new model is borrowed from the CLA class and the first generation W212 E-class. The presentation of the car took place on May 15, 2013 in Hamburg, Germany.
